"And just where have you been Merlin?" Prince Arthur asked, striding towards him with his arms folded. Although the pair were firm friends nowadays, Arthur still liked to belittle Merlin in front of his noble friends and the army. It was just his way, and not all of it was pretense.
The training ground was full of his knights today, sparring and practicing stances, training their horses and every other army related activity you could think of. Several of the royal guards were there too, polishing armour or sharpening weapons. Arthur felt a great sense of pride as he watched them. They were his men and they fought not only for Camelot, but for him too.
He clapped Merlin on the back and bent down to his height. "Just where is my sparring partner Merlin?" He asked as though he didn't know what had happened. Poor old Merlin would probably think him sincere. "And was it worth you polishing my armour today?" He sighed. Merlin was loyal and trustworthy, but he was not a Knights servant. The armour which had been freshly polished was now laying in a heap at their feet, emitting clouds of dust each time it slipped. He picked up a recently gleaming greave, which was now a dull grey colour, and brushed some of the dust off to show a slightly brighter grey. "Merlin," Arthur said patiently, putting his arm round the boys shoulder and pulling him along to walk with him, "I am the Prince of Camelot. And as Prince of Camelot, people have certain...expectations of me. One of those expectations, is that my armour is polished and presentable!" He raised his voice at the end of the sentence, more for effect than anything else, and several nearby men glanced round. "Prepare me for sparring." He said calmly, and tossed Merlin the greave.

"I thought i pulled off an emotion woman quite well!" He shireked, feigning a high pitched womans voice and pretending to break down and cry. He laughed and flipped open the cover of the book he was holding.
"A History of Albion" He read aloud. Morgana had assumed he had picked this book at random, and he had, but now he was coming up with a plan. Camelot was the capital of Albion, so he expected the book to be full of mostly boring facts about it, but there would also no doubt be some information on the neighbouring cities and towns, and one of those would be Annabell Glenns kingdom. He would explain to his father that he had been reasearching the neighbouring kingdoms and trying to find out what had led Annabell's home to such a tragic end. Arthur would say he was trying to prevent the same thing from happening to Camelot, and Uther would fall for it, for nothing was more important to him than Camelot. It was a fool proof plan.
He explained it quickly, cutting out the part about it being Annabell's kingdom that had fallen, for he didn't want Morgana to start teasing him because he was befriending her. "If Uther comes in, I want you to tell him I have been in here all day studying." He told her, rather than asked. "I will leave this book in my chambers, so it looks like i really was researching." He walked to the door, nodding to the librarian as he passed him, with a "dont-even-think-about-telling-Uther" kind of stare. "Oh and Morgana," He added, "If you betray me, it will be more than a night you spend in the dungeons."

"Of course I'm not busy! I would make time for you even if i were," He widened his eyes at her, trying to show he was foolling his father. Uther himself told Arthur that he must not forget his duties once the tour was over, but Arthur just rolled his eyes at Anna, trying to make her laugh. Princely duties were such a bore he would rather do Merlins jobs than his own...Well perhaps not.
Merlin. That reminded him, he had agreed to meet Merlin at some point this afternoon as to get out of his duties. It had turned out that he needed no excuse due to this dinner, but he still felt he should find Merlin soon.
"I am glad you have enjoyed your meal" Uther said, standing up from the table and prompting Arthur and Anna to do the same, "I must now retire to my chambers, but please do let one of my servants know if you need anything at all." He left quickly leaving Arthur and Anna to sit back down.
"So were all your family killed?" He asked, less than tactfully. He wasn't a particuarly compassionate boy.

"I am glad you are better," He smiled, giving her a quick squeeze round the shoulders before standing up and reverting to his more arrogant temperament. "I trust you won't be sitting around here reading all day?" He questioned, "We have a guest who could probably do with some company."
He was referring to Annabell Glenn, whom he had met just recently. He felt a kindness towards her and wanted her to feel at home in the castle, thus his lame attempt to force Morgana to befriend her. He would of course still spend as much time entertaining her as he could but his father would notice after a while that he hadn't practiced with the Knights or been out on a royal hunt for several days.
"I should really find my father, he is going to kill me before long," He sighed. "Any tips on what to do when he is in a rage?" Arthur grinned, referring of course to the times Morgana had purposely defied King Uther's orders. It had resulted in a tough night in the dungeons and also (unbeknown to Arthur and Uther) the Kings near downfall at the hands of a rogue sorceror in time where magic was less acceptable than now.
After Morgana had finished, Arthur stepped over to one of the nearby bookcases and picked out a book at random. "Just in case, you know?" He grinned.

"No" Arthur replied cheekily, "I want you out of my castle now!" Uther laughed, "Your castle? Son, one day you will be king, but not for a few years yet!" Arthur grinned and looked at Anna, wondering whether she would be able to make a life for herself now that her kingdom had failed. It wouldnt be the easiest of tasks, not without guards or servants to help her. Nobles were notoriously useless at simple jobs such as washing and cooking, not because they were stupid, simply because they had never had a need to be taught.
The servants had cleared away the last of the food now and Arthur was leaning back in his chair with his stomach full. He enjoyed meals like this more than most of his princely duties, and he could only imagine what he would have to do the next day, when it was back to work.
"Anna," He asked suddenly, "Would you like a tour of the city tomorrow? I fear without proper tuiton you could get lost, or wander into one of the less...pleasant parts of town." Uther raised his eyebrows, in surprise rather than disproval for Arthur never usually offered to go out of his way to help a guest. Still he was impressed and assumed his son must finally be warming to the idea of being a royal prince. In reality he had just figured that entertaining Anna would be more exciting than sitting in a musty room listening to his father discuss royal matters with equally musty old men.

"Well you would think so, wouldn't you?" He grinned and punched her playfully on the arm. Even though he teased, he had a sisterly love for Morgana and he wouldnt have ever thrown him in gaol for real.
"In truth I am trying to hide from father. He keeps sending me out on ridiculously boring trips. I figured if he can't find me, he cant make me go!" At the moment Uther himself ventured out into the town square yelling Arthurs name at the top of his lungs.
"Argh!" He yelled, trying to duck out of sight, and falling backwards off of the bench. He rolled into a sitting position and stood up. He looked at Morgana's face and said: "Your just jealous of my princely poise."
He smiled and turned as the door opened, it turned out to be the court librarian coming in with a selection of large, boring-looking books. He really wished Merlin was about, things could be interesting when he was. He especially liked it when he persuaded Merlin to set Lancelots hair on fire, or tie his boot laces together, although it wasnt easy persuading him...
"Morgana, how are you feeling now?" The prince asked his question sincerley, fearing he had been a little too harsh on her this morning.

Arthur sighed as Lady Morgana insulted his intelligence and replied, "Be careful Morgana or i ill have you thrown in gaol" He smiled again, the sarcastic sort of smile that he saved almost solely for her.
"Well I thought perhaps he had been hiding in here?" Arthur made a show of searching the aisles of books behind him for Merlin, before turning back and crossing his arms over his chest. It wouldn't have been surprising for Morgana to know where Merlin might be, he was almost an a servant to Gaius-who had been treating her- and she had a tendancy to hide things from Arthur just so she could annoy him.
He sat himself down beside her and looked out of the window nearby into the courtyard. His knights were down there, practicing stances and just generally patrolling the square. He was proud of them, under his command they protected Camelot and its people. "Look Morgana, that is real knowledge! Better than your book rubbish!"
He looked over the guards to the market stall which lined the far end of the square. Many of his people crowded round, haggling for bargains just so they could feed their family. His father was a good king, but sometime Arthur thought he could do better. Would do better.

Arthur frowned playfully as Anna suggested there were no princes in the room before grinning and taking another bite of his bread. It was always good to have guests for the feasts were twice as good.
"What are your plans Lady Annabell?" The King asked suddenly, taking a more serious note. Arthur nodded and added, "Yes Anna, as generous as my father is he cannot let you stay here forever!" He grinned again trying to show her he wasn't being insulting.
Arthur continued to eat, letting Uther take the lead int he conversation. He enjoyed hsi food far too much, and right now there was plenty of it.

"So Gaius has finally let you leave your bed?" Arthur had crept up on Morgana, hoping to make her jump."You don't look great, are you sure you should be let out?" He smiled sarcastically. Lady Morgana had come to Camelot when she was merely a girl, and her father was killed in a battle King Uther had sent him into. On his death bed he had made Uther promise to protect Morgana and he had agreed to bring her up as his own. Doing so had made Arthur think of Morgana as a sister as well as a friend and he loved nothing more than teasing and arguing with her.
"History?" He sneered seeing the book she was reading, "Could you have found anything more boring?" Arthur wasn't a big book fan. He would much rather be outside throwing his weight around and showing someone who was boss. Although of course he did it with princely poise.
"Have you seen Merlin anywhere? I seem to have lost him and my armour is starting to dull..."

Uther didn't seem particuarly impressed as Anna explained how she had ridden from her homeland by herself. The forest which spanned around most of Camelot was well known to house several rogue and dangerous sorcerors and even the Knights were loathe to go in there sometimes. Arthur wasn't especially surprised though, he hadn't thought of Annabell as the damsel-in-distress type.
He responded to her question quickly though, so to cut Uther off before he started to voice his displeasure. "Ahh My Lady," He smiled, "My stables are the best in all of Camelot!" When I manage to get Merlin to clean them he added under his breath. "You could say they were fit for a prince" He laughed at his own joke and was surprised to see his father smiling too.
The servants came in to remove the finished dishes and replaced them with plates of meats and fruit. Arthur began to help himself to the food on the table, piling his dish high with grapes, rabbit and bread. The serving maids also brough large jugs of wine in and began filling hte goblets on the table. It was truly a meal fit for a king.
