Name: Maelanthes 'Veredus' Tyrell
Age: 17
Sex: Female
Class: Peasant.
Appearance: Being conservative by nature, Maelanthes prefers to wear clothing that covers her skin and at first glance, even at 5"5, she is easy enough to overlook. She is slender, with graceful limbs that have been toned from her recent travels and, although she isn't as curvy as most women there would be no mistaking her for a boy. However, she has learnt from experience that if she bound her chest and cut her hair short she could pass as a boy, albeit a pretty one. Her appearance is slightly strange but oddly charismatic - brown hair, dark brown eyes, long limbs and good bone structure that would remind anyone of a feline.
Played by: Summer Glau
Character: First impressions of Maelanthes would range from 'she's a nice girl' to 'she's a little bit too happy' At first meeting, this girl appears kind, hard-working, loyal, friendly and always with a smile on her face. However, look a little closer and subtle hints at her true nature will appear; a cold glint at the heart of her comforting eyes or the brief flicker of blank canvas that reappears before an appropriate expression is careful drawn on her face. Her past has given her the impression that emotions can cause pain and so Maelanthes has become convinced that controlling all her emotions will keep her safe from everything.
She never acts on her emotions alone, always applying logic to her actions and words, which may or may not be a good thing. Being ruled by her head and not her heart, Maelanthes can cast aside any emotions she feels which could threaten her. As a result she has extreme control over her emotions and, knowing that her magic is triggered by her emotions, she knows how to use this to her advantage. However, when she is confronted by something new she sometimes panics because she doesn't know how to react. She is extremely observant, being able to portray emotions she's never felt by copying the actions of others. Love, however is one emotion that she has never been able to mimic or even see.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Is a talented mimic, has an uncanny ability to memorise sounds that she hears
+ Her ability to move is almost cat-like - agile, graceful, balanced
+ Animals like her, especially cats and horses. She grew up riding and running with horses.
+ She loves to learn new things, be it a physical skill or an intellectual one, and she is usually a fast learner.
+ She can read and write
+- Is unaffected by fear, which can be good in some situations, but can get her into trouble.
- Sometimes she second-guesses herself and she can be indecisive
- Has trouble connecting and bonding with other people
- Suffers effects from the degree of her emotional control such as emotional outbursts, tremors, illness
- Useless with heavy weapons like longswords, axes and maces
- Sometimes crowds make her feel physically ill
Magic: She has magic but she is unsure what it fits under. She has the ability to ask things (be it the ground, inanimate objects or animals) to do things for her - she calls it Persuasion or Coercion because most times she has to impose her will on the target of her request. It seems to work better on animals, which Maelanthes finds strange, but she puts it down to most animals liking her.
She also can ask water to do little things like move, this is different than Persuasion/Coercion because usually the water does what she wants without much force. Also, she feels a bond with water, feeling at peace whenever she's near a natural source like rivers or lakes, and feels that she can talk with it.
Weaponry Skills: Maelanthes doesn't have much skill with most weapons, although she can dodge with the best of them. She is, however, talented enough with knives and a bow and arrow to have survived by herself for the last few years.
Character History: Maelanthes was born to a Roman farmer, Cato, and his Irish wife Rosaleen. She had a brother, Aodhfin, who she was very close to although he was older than her by 8 years. They lived a simple life on a quaint farm in Rome, taming and breeding wild horses. Maelanthes rode her first horse at the age of 3 and she fell in love with the animals, sometimes even running with the young foals. This behaviour continued even as her little sisters Rose and Elizabeth were born as she turned 7 and then 10. Her mother taught her to read and write and she found another passion in reading anything she could find, be it history or tales of magic. As she grew, she also learnt to live off the land, roaming with the wild horses and venturing into forests with nothing but her knives and bow and arrows. For these two reasons, her brother used to call her Veredus, meaning not only 'swift horse' but also 'hunter'.
They lived a peaceful life, with only one mishap that almost saw the family lose their youngest member but ended with Maelanthes discovering one of her magical talents. As Maelanthes approached the age of 12 however, tragedy struck her family when a foreign army invaded and overthrew their monarch. They lost their land and Maelanthes's parents decided to move to the city to find jobs. It was difficult, as everyone was looking for a way to support their family and they ended up in the slums. Her parents, desperate to support their 4 children, took on whatever job they could find - her father became a bodyguard for a moneylender and her mother took a job in a brothel. Although Maelanthes was old enough to understand the reason behind their new jobs, she was unable to comprehend the desperation behind it and she swore she would never fall as far as her mother. Fate, however, had other ideas and by the age of 13 Maelanthes had lost her mother, father and older brother to tavern fights, brutality and war.
Her brother was the last person she lost and without him she felt crushed by the world. Maelanthes knew however that her younger sisters needed her to be focused on their survival. Having a job as a tavern wench, Maelanthes had thought she would be able to support her younger sisters who were now aged 7 and 4. However the world seemed to conspire against her and the rent for their residence increased until Maelanthes was scrounging every penny, sometimes stealing to get what she needed. It was a harsh existence but Maelanthes thought she was doing well enough, until her sister Elizabeth became sick and she realised she had no money with which to pay a physician. She was almost 15 by then, having survived for almost 7 months without any help, and she knew from the offers by men in the tavern how she could make enough money to save her sister.
The first time she almost changed her mind but, knowing that her sister could be loosing her chance at survival, she went through with it and was surprised by the money she was paid. It was enough to get a physician to look at her sister and she was told she'd need to give her medicine. It was expensive but it seemed to work and it gave her enough hope to do whatever it took to afford it. She still worked in the tavern but this time she accepted offers if they were high enough. Her sister lived for another year before succumbing to another disease and all the while Maelanthes sold herself, eventually learning to cope by hiding within her mind, surrounded by water. With the death of her sister however, Maelanthe finally lost herself to grief and acted rashly, believing that she was to blame for her sister's death.
She found a new home for her sister, somewhere away from the slums and then she left her homeland to travel alone. Having no wealth Maelanthes often paid her way with her body or her other skills such as hunting or stealing. After wandering the land for almost 2 years, Maelanthes heard about the new Magician's Guild in Camelot and decided to seek them out, desperate to find a purpose for her magic which hadn't helped her sister.
Additional Information: Stable Hand at Camelot Castle.
Sample Roleplay: Hope you don't mind if it's not a human character. If you do I'll find another example. I probably won't be posting such long posts here since I haven't roleplayed a human for quite some time but that's what experience is for xD

The spotted filly could only stare in wonder at the sight before her as she pondered what luck it was that had brought her here. She had been eager to explore this new land, with its beautiful landscapes and varied terrain, so had set out immediately after being welcomed. From the Gateway, full of pine trees and crooked trickles of water, to the lush Flooded Plains and now here, to this strange mass grave. From the Flooded Plains she had followed the creek north, curious to her new surroundings and thirsting for knowledge about what was her new home. It was like all the lands she had crossed in her path had melded into one giant jigsaw puzzle.
Moving north, it had shocked her to feel the ground underfoot change from lush grasses to loose sand that stirred as she continued walking. The terrain had looked so flat, stretched out until it reached the only landmark visible - the Pegasus Cliffs. The land where her kind used to live, from where they were driven out like unwelcome guests and all because of petty rivalry. Dilabi could understand many things, being quite bright but this, this rivalry between the races, was something she couldn't comprehend. All the races hated each other, warred against each other because they thought their race was the only ones that should exist, but why? Dilabi had grown up in a purist pegasus herd but she had never heard anything more than "the equines have no wings to fly with, they are not as special as us" and "unicorns have horns, but what use is it but to fight amonst each other with".
To little Dilabi, even now, they seemed the most trivial things and most illogical as well. Surely looking different wasn't enough to cause hatred amongst races, was it? The little filly had not yet learned about the magic that existed here, only heard rumours, but she couldn't see that being a factor either. Then again she was still quite young. Perhaps I just don't understand adults. Until I understand, I had better keep quiet and stay away from the fighting. I don't want to fight others just because they're equines or unicorns.
As she had pondered the issue of the racial hatred, Dilabi had found the edge of the peculiar landmark that had given the area its name. At first she had stared, wondering where it had come from and how she had missed it when everything had looked so flat. Looking down however had snapped her out of her wonder as she resisted snapping her eyes shut and running away. The ground was so far down it made her nervous, even standing away from the edge as she was. It had been many months since her accident, which she still didn't remember, but she was still afraid of heights.
A gust of wind, hot on Dilabi's wings, on her legs, it feels wonderful. It had been so long since she had flown, felt the wind under her wings, let it sooth her worries. She used to love high places where she could spread her wings and just let the wind make her feel welcome. If I can't fly, I can at least feel the wind and feel the rush of being high above the ground. I need to squash my fear. To do that, Dilabi decided, she would have to visit the bottom of this pit, discover its every crevice and secret, become its confidante in a way.
The filly had begun to follow the edge around, searching for a way to erase the fear standing in the way of something she needed, when she had come upon the sight of what she supposed was a unicorn. A very beautiful unicorn, she observed; a pure white body, ink painted extremities and a stunning horn of light and water perfectly balanced. Looking closer, Dilabi noticed the maiden's eyes were closed, but seconds later they opened, a brilliant blue, darkened by negativity. The filly was afraid she would be noticed but the mare merely spoke softly, as if to herself, then exploded with anger and other emotions that Dilabi could only guess at. One emotion that she could feel underlying everything else, however, was pain. The unicorn remained there, silent now and Dilabi thought to leave but her legs would not move. She thought to herself 'move, leave, don't stay, she might be trouble,' but something - curiosity, sympathy, perhaps even compassion - made her traitorous heart say 'stay, she's in pain, don't leave.'
So she stayed.
