Name: Richard Cabal
Age: 35
Sex: Male
Class: Citizen most likely. He is protecting his lady, Lady Grace de Beaumont from harm. In his kingdom of origin he was a man-at-arms but no longer holds that capacity or claims to be part of any army.
Appearance:
Richard has longish dirty blond hair, pale eyes and a beard. He is a sturdy and tall man, having attained his strength from his service as man-at-arms to the Beaumont family. He has the marks of battle on him, a scar above his eye and various scars on his chest, back and arms. Some of the scarring is from pox, something he managed to survive but not his family. His skin tone is ruddy from a long time spent outdoors and his face is lined from loss and experience. Upon his arrival to Camelot, Richard is thin from much travelling.
Richard wears mail armour that looks well looked after. He has no head protection and no shield. Additionally, Richard wears his short sword strapped to his hip and heavy boots. Although everything is well looked after, his equipment and clothing shows sign of wear. When he is not wearing his armour, Richard wears loose peasent clothing. His clothing is dirt stained and shows sign of mending.
Richard will be played by Sean Bean.
Character:
Richard is an honourable man who will avoid unnessesary killing considers the loss of his kingdom a personal failing. Because his family has cared for the Beaumont family for a long time, he is also proud of his family history and the people he serves. This pride leads him to defend the honour of his family and that of the Beaumont’s. Richard is calm and rarely given to emotional outbursts. He does his duty and dislikes wallowing in emotion. Beneath his dutiful exterior is a warm man plagued with grief over the loss of his family and kingdom. Occasionally, the memories are stronger than usual, provoked by events or innocent words. When this occurs, he will have nightmares. Due to a long history of serving others, Richard is well aware of his rank and will honour his superiors.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
- Honourable
- Hard-working
- Cool-headed
- Shoulders too much responsbility for failure.
- Fearful of illness.
- Frequently comes across as aloof.
Magic: Richard has no magical ability.
Weaponry Skills: Richard has extensive experience with the short sword. He can use a short bow but has only used it for hunting.
Character History:
Richard was born to a family who has often cared for the de Beaumont family as men-at-arms. They resided in Hwicee, a sub-kingdom that shares the northeastern border of Mercia. Richard continued his family tradition when he was old enough to begin training. By the time he was 20, Richard had defended the de Beaumont’s from bandits. At 21 he murdered an assassin who was targeting the Lord Beaumont. At this age his eye was caught by Clarine, a daughter of a well reputed merchant family specialising in textiles. They courted for two years before marrying and bearing two daughters at age 22.
Life between 21 and 30 was peaceful enough for Richard. He fought battles for his lord, raised his children and loved his wife. He entertained his daughters with stories of the ancients. Richard was regarded with respect by his peers and was well-trusted. At 31 life grew darker. Merchant caravens were targeted by well trained soldiers and villages were put to the torch. Scouts periodically found the soldier’s camps and Richard was often involved in the attempt at driving the soliders out of his lands. He won some battles and lost others. When he was 33 a pox hit the towns, wiping out many men, women and children. Richard’s family contracted the illness and died. Richard was close to death from the same illness and still bears scars from the pox. He survived only because of his physical fitness and fortitude, acquired through his service.
When he was 34 the castle at Hwicce was beseiged and the Hwicce forces soundly beaten. It was then that Lord Gilbert bade Richard to take Grace to the hills and protect her. Richard sometimes blames himself for obeying orders, perhaps he could have helped defend the castle if had stayed? Grace and Richard have been travelling together for a year now, disguised as a mercenary and servent/slave. Richard shares Grace’s desire to restore Grace to her rightful birthright and his own name to its respected glory. Upon reaching Camelot, Richard looks to find a job as hired guard for shops.
Additional Information: I’ve been RPing with Grace de Beaumont’s handler for years and so she has full permission to powerplay my character.
Sample Roleplay:
For a moment, Richard was disoriented on the field of battle. Fatigue weighed on his arms and legs and his body ached from where he had failed to defend himself. Smoke from the burning buildings drifted over the battle field, obscuring the sight of broken men and horses. The moaning had started, some of them calling for their mothers. Richard could hear someone giving the death rattle, blood and breath burbling in the poor soul’s throat. There was no more enemy so Richard seathed his sword. Sweat drooled down his face, leaving trails in the soot and blood on his skin. Another voice joined the moaning close to him, Richard reached for his dagger, face grim as he considered his next duty. Delivering the mercy cut to men and horses. His gloves were going to get much bloodier. Before he could begin his grim task, he heard a horse trotting closer to him. Chain jingled with the horse’s motion and when Richard turned to face the oncomer, sunlight glanced off the oncomer’s helm.
“My lord!” Richard stood at attention, hand on his heart. His lord, Gilbert de Beaumont, Ealdorman of Hwicce, approached. The horse snorted at the scent of blood and sweat soaked metal. Lord Gilbert silently indicated for Richard to stand at ease. Richard did so gratefully and shielded his eyes from the sun.
“We lost the village. There are some survivors, when you have finished up here, ensure that the peasent survivors have settled into camp.” Lord Gilbert commanded as his horse shifted from hoof to hoof.
“My lord,” Richard bowed and the Lord continued on. When it was polite to do so, Richard stepped towards one of the dying and crouched down. The man was unmarked, clothing tattered to try and encourage a person to think he was some common bandit. He and his fellows were too well trained for that.
“Who are you?” Richard whispered and then slit the bandit’s throat.
