Arthur's eyes flicked constantly between the guard with a bemused look on his face and Lexi. She looked annoyed, maybe shocked- it was hard to tell but Arthur knew from the way that she spoke that the laid back and care free moment they had spent together was over.
"I..I.." He stuttered, blushing red and smiling awkwardly back at her. Words escaped him and as he hastily tucked a flyaway strand of blond behind his ear he found her face blank and emotionless. He only felt worse.
During the time spent muttering incoherent words and worrying about Lexi's opinion, the little boat had passed by the guards and into the city waterway. It was strange entering the city, where the throng of people grew suddenly and the noise increased tenfold. Arthur both liked and disliked it, it shattered the peace sure, but from their vessel in the water they could see and hear everything as though they were invisible.

Seeing that Arthur was uncomfortable, Lexi tried to put a smile on her face again as they entered the city. It wasn't too hard - smiling was like breathing for her. It's easy to forgive but impossible to forget, was a saying from way in the past. It floated into her brain like a leaf. Living with memories was easier to do than living with regrets.
It usually took a lot to really hurt Lexi. One of her brothers had often said she was like a dog, constantly forgiving anyone who harms it, intentionally or no, and always just as happy. A little lie wasn't about to get her upset. It just made her curious as to Arthur's reasons why.
The hustle and bustle of the city roused her from her thoughts, and she glanced about. The quiet of the river just a little ways upstream was there one second and gone the other. Looking back, she could still make out the guard. Was that a smug expression she saw? It was hard to tell.
Finally, she turned back to Arthur, her smile still there. "Ants in your pants?" she asked playfully.

Arthur couldn't help but grin as Lexi returned back to her previous lighthearted manner and started to smile as though he hadnt just lied about his entire identity. In fact she didn't seem too bothered at all and after a few minutes she returned to teasing him about anything she could.
"Do you not mind that I'm Prince Arthur?" He asked, incredulous that someone should treat him as a normal citizen. It had never happened before and now he wasn't quite sure how he should behave. Princely? Or perhaps he should just be himself?
As the boat drifted further into the city, a couple of passers by had started to notice them and a few children had taken to running along the bank, excitedly waving and yelling their greetings to Lexi and Arthur. They were too young to know that he was the prince and it made him smile to know that these were his only subjects who showed him how they truly felt- with the exception of Lexi of course.
"Push her in mister!" One of the children shouted, making his accomplices giggle. Arthur laughed wondering whether he should play up to their suggestion.

Lexi downright laughed at his expression. He seemed startled by her not caring about it. Normally, Lexi steered clear of nobles, mainly because she would just get herself in a heck of a lot of trouble before two minutes past. But Arthur had just showed her that she might be a little wrong to judge someone just by their birthright. Still, there were plenty of stuck-up nobles out there, though she was glad Arthur wasn't one of them. "'Course not! You seem like a nice guy, aside from lying through your teeth. I guess sometimes higher-ups have to lie, though."
When the boy shouted for Arthur to push in her, Lexi giggled and clung to side of the boat. "If you do, I swear I will hunt you down and slap you into next week!" she exclaimed. "If the water wasn't so cold, I'd jump in of my own choice!" She contemplated pushing Arthur into the water for a second. It could make them even, but she decided that his being totally embarrassed a few seconds ago was revenge enough. Still, it might be funny to see him splashing around. She grinned to herself and shook her head at the idea.
The children's mothers, Lexi noticed, at first smiled about it. But then they seemed to realize just who Arthur was, and she saw several young girls, probably the children's older sisters, huddle together and start giggling madly. Great. Gossip-Girl City, here came the news of the day. "This is gonna get around the whole country in a matter of a day, you know," she told Arthur, giggling a bit herself and pointing with a thumb to the gang of teenage girls.

Arthur too, had noticed the older girls who had begun pointing and blushing as they saw him. Great He thought, he hated having to put up with the stares and terrible attempts to woo him. As Lexi rightly pointed out, it would also be spreading like wildfire that Prince Arthur had been seen in a boat with a strange girl. He bit his lip as he tried to think how he could get out of this one- his father after all, would be furious when he was supposed to be wooing Lady Sophia.
"Well," He finally began, a smirk on his face, "If they are going to spread the rumours anyway, we might as well give them something to fuel them with!" With that he leant forwards and pulled Lexi into a close embrace, placing his lips firmly on hers. After a few long seconds he pulled out of the kiss and leapt from the boat and onto the bank in one swift motion. With nothing but a quick wink at Lexi he strode into the city, a grin spread over his face.

Lexi realized too late by what he had meant by that. She didn't know what to expect, but everything was a total surprise when he leaned forward and kissed her, wrapping her in a hug. Ah, what the heck. She hugged him back and had to stop herself from laughing, picturing the faces of the onlookers in her mind. It was purely for the fun of it, nothing more. When he pulled away, she made sure to keep her face in a sneaky smile, trying to keep in character. It worked, but when he looked back and winked, she nearly blew the cover. If she looked away too quickly, the gossips would think she had faked it. So she tracked Arthur with her eyes until he disappeared in the crowd.
Standing slowly, she cast her gaze across the crowd. Several were staring at her. Glancing down into the boat, she saw the royal jacket. It was just lying there, wet spots almost gone now. Taking it, she held it gently, keeping up the act. Holding it close, she copied Arthur and leaped from the boat, landing on her feet. Instantly, voices asked her who she was and what she was doing with the Prince. Smiling sneakily, she shook her head and backed away, holding the jacket like it was a lifeline and she was drowning. She didn't know where to go from there though. She could go deeper into the city. Yes, that might spread word faster. Setting off like she knew her next destination, she pulled the jacket on herself. She might return the jacket. If she didn't lose it first.
Rumors sped ahead of her like wildfire, but she ignored everyone.
Well played, Arthur. Well played...
