((I know it seems like the thing with the branches is a big deal but I tried to show how Veredus' magic is different. Instead of imposing her will, she convinces the elements to want to follow her suggestions. If that's not okay then I'll change it but I think magic could work differently for individuals.))
Leaving the Enrollment Office, Veredus decided that she would find somewhere to set up her camp. She had decided upon staying within the castle walls when she could just as easily survive within the forests that were a mere quarter-hour run from the city gates. Quickly she made her way towards the city gates, judging by the position of the sun the enrollment interview had taken longer than she had anticipated and she had about five hours, six if she was lucky, to find a suitable camping place and set it all up. Passing through the gates, Veredus glanced around to see if anyone was around before settling into a quick pace and heading out for the treeline in the distance.
Reaching the tree line, Veredus slowed her pace to a cautious walk, although she was hardly winded and just being within the trees again rejuvenated her. It would be bad if she took a wrong step and injured herself in this unfamiliar forest - she'd have to find somewhere to stay within the city and she had no money from her job yet. Once she had become more familiar she would be able to travel as swiftly as she wished. She had travelled for half an hour through thick brush and thorny scrub, having left whatever game trails she found behind - 'off the beaten track' was always the best policy when it came to camps, she had always found - but she had found a suitable place to camp.
Walking a perimeter that only she could see, Veredus touched each plant along her path, mentally measuring the distance between each. She had an idea for a shelter that she had never tried before, but always hoped to when her magic became stronger. Having been accepted into the Magicians' Guild had boosted her confidence in her abilities, she knew that she could do this. Besides, extra practice always helped. Stopping where the distance between the branches of one tree were close to the tree beside it, Veredus clasped the leaves of each tree in her hands. Rubbing the smooth leaves with her thumbs absentmindedly, Veredus tried to think of a suitable spell. She needed the branches to bind together, so 'redimio stipes' would work. Now, she knew that her magic was slightly different to normal magic - she could talk to the elements after all - so she would need to coax the branches to literally want to grow.
Looking around to find inspiration, Veredus realised that the leaves she held so gently were too dry to be healthy, which was unusual at the beginning of Spring. Releasing the grip of her hands, she carefully approached the tree, letting her hand rest gently upon the trunk as she spoke "Quid nefas?" Slowly a feeling overcame her, as if something was draining her energy. Opening eyes that had closed involuntarily, Veredus scanned the base of the trunk, now knowing what she was looking for. It took her a few minutes to find what she wanted - an innocent looking plant attached to the root of the tree that was actually a vicious parasitic weed. Crouching beside the weed, Veredus gripped it gently by the stem and sent her sense out through the place her fingers came in contact with the soil. What she found saddened her. This weed was notorious for it's roots that invaded the root systems of other trees, siphoning off nutrients and water, but she had never seen a case so advanced. It wasn't unexpected however, seeing as no one tended to these wild trees. Unable to leave the tree suffering, Veredus used the spell she often used when encountering weeds, concentrating on an image of the roots thinning, she spoke sternly "Minuo radix."
Sending her senses out again, Veredus was pleased to find that some of the roots had shrivelled and died. It was only a small amount but she could feel the tree was pleased. Smiling to herself, she repeated the procedure on the second tree then resumed her place between them. Grasping their branches, the leaves noticeably healthier than before, she spoke gently, "Redimio stipes," while she conveyed to the trees that she wanted shelter and in exchange she would help them grow stronger. Feeling their acceptance, Veredus pushed her magic into the trees, feeling the branches slowly wrapping around each other to form a strong wall that resembled mesh. Patting the fruits of her labour, she gave a silent gratias knowing the trees would hear her.
Feeling winded but exhilarated about her accomplishment, Veredus quickly repeated the procedure a few more times, managing to complete half of her protective circle. It was pretty much the same but some trees had no parasite and needed more convincing in the form of more favours, like fertiliser, before they agreed to her requests. Sitting down in the center of her half-completed circle, Veredus cupped her hands before silently saying bibō and water slowly gathered in her makeshift cup. Taking a sip, Veredus relished in the cool liquid and the ease at which she had drawn it from the air.
Water had always been her favoured element - there was something about it that sang to her soul, it drew away her worries like an embrace from her mother once had. Since the time she could walk Veredus had found herself as much at home with the forest and its lakes, as on her parent's farm. Perhaps even more so. Releasing the water from her hands, Veredus watched it return to the air, leaving behind only a light mist that shimmered then vanished. Sinking onto the ground Veredus spread her senses out, and feeling everything - the trees, the shrubs, the water, the loamy earth - let herself fall asleep, in the comforting embrace of nature.
